Video Overview

The system shown here is implemented on a mid-scale dairy farm in Ontario. It has used both soybeans and canola for pressing and its system is a combination of new parts and previously owned farm equipment. The extruder at this location is run 24/7 and yields about 10-15 L of soybean oil per hour.

Average Monthly Production Values:
Oil: 3000 litres
Meal: 21 tonnes
Sediment, Hulls, etc.: 600 kilograms

Meal is used as an energy supplement for 150 dairy cows, any excess meal is sold to area/neighbouring farmers for their cattle. The straight vegetable oil is used as a fuel to run farm equipment such as a tractor, pickup, and generator. The 50Kw genset is connected to the grid by net metering. Some of the oil has also been used as cooking oil and for soap making. The excess sediment is mixed in with the meal and fed to the cows on site. The system has both new and previously owned equipment implemented and its return on investment is expected to be 3 years.
