On Farm Presses let Dairy Operations get Better, not Bigger
Ontario Grain Farmer, November 2011 Amy Petherick
HIGH PRICES are a welcome change for grain farmers but a challenge for feed purchasers like dairy farmers. Although many choose to get bigger to increase profitability, some producers are focusing on feeding cows better.
With the quota cap limiting herd expansion since 2009, many Ontario dairy farmers that are looking to grow their operation have started re-investing in their cropping and feeding practices. One increasingly popular option to investigate is on-farm feed processing with the use of a soybean press. Jasmin Hofer of Energrow, a Newton based company that produces one type of oilseed press, says she has been extremely busy this fall attending shows and trying to keep up with information requests.
“Farmers are telling us that they have been thinking more and more about getting a press for their farms,” says Hofer. “Since dairy producers can't buy quota right now, there is more cash available for other investments.”

2012 Energrow Pressing System Unveiled |
|
The all-new ES3750B Energrow Oilseed Pressing System was unveiled at the Canadian International Outdoor Farm Show on September 20-22. Energrow's pressing system features a touchscreen PLC control panel, which makes it very easy for users to oversee the running of the system. "These systems are made to run themselves," says Energrow systems designer Nicholas Leja. "We design Energrow Systems to be as easy as possible to use and maintain, while still providing high quality oil and meal products."
New features and benefits of the ES3750B:
- runs on its own (24/7 high efficiency production with no babysitting)
- timed production, and self start-up and shut down (saves the producer a lot of time and press runs when its needed)
- presets to run different crops (easy to change from one oilseed to another)
- interacts with supporting equipment (Hammer Mill Control Panel means the augers, bins, and hammer mill that are part of the system will reliably work together)
- System is expansion ready (more presses can easily be added as capacity or demand grows)

Company Profile
Energrow Inc. is dedicated to helping local farmers obtain the most value from their crops and save on feed, fuel, and electrical energy expenses. Ensuring customer satisfaction by implementing a highly durable product, supported by outstanding customer service, is the company’s number one priority. Creating presses with integrative adaptability for each farm is central to Energrow Inc.’s philosophy. Energrow Inc. is a company by farmers, for farmers. All presses are manufactured through parts supplied by local businesses and Energrow Inc. affiliates in Ontario.
Product Description
The Energrow Expeller is a European inspired cold screw press made to suit the needs of farmers here in North America. This press enables farmers to control their own commodity and add value to their product by integrating it into farm life thereby minimizing various external costs such as feed, fuel, and even electricity. The unit processes oilseeds (i.e. canola, soybeans, hemp) and produces two bioproducts: meal (a pelletized animal feed high in energy and protein), and oil (a value-added product that has many uses incl. feed, lubricant, fuel).
History
Energrow was founded in 2006 and is located in Newton, ON, which is 25 kilometres east of Kitchener. Energrow has been developing its product at its Newton location through extensive testing and valuable insight from local area farmers. The company is advancing into the market with an official product launch in May 2008.
Founder Profile
Jasmin Hofer has a BA degree in Honours Arts Co-op from the University of Waterloo with a specialization in Language and International Trade. With experience growing up on a dairy farm combined with travels to Switzerland, Jasmin developed a keen sense for the heartaches that farmers suffer from the costs of running a farm operation. Her affiliations with the MBET (Master of Business, Entrepreneurship & Technology) program at the University of Waterloo, Bioenterprise, and Perth Community Futures Development Corporation give her a competitive edge to forge lasting partnerships and apply her business knowledge of Canada’s agricultural industry. A strong understanding of the agricultural situation in Ontario enables Jasmin to perfect the development of Energrow Inc.’s vegetable-oil-production system.
Interesting Facts
- With the Energrow System, crops (oilseeds) can be pressed by farmers allowing them to use the two bioproducts: meal (a palatable, high-energy feedstuff) and straight vegetable oil (a potential fuel/energy source).
- Straight vegetable oil when used as a fuel is CO2 neutral – reducing farmers’ ecological footprint.
- All Energrow Inc. presses and systems are designed and manufactured in Ontario, Canada.
- The nutrient-rich soybean meal has been proven to increase milk production in dairy cattle and promote weight gain in pigs and chickens.
- 1 tonne of raw soybeans produces approximately 100 litres of soybean oil (354 kWh or 475 hp) – that’s enough energy to run 246 sixty-watt light-bulbs per day!
